Walk/Don't Walk Didn't Teach English
Not everyone is thrilled about the program however. "The idea that you're going to teach people math while they're waiting to cross the street is something only a Repulican would come up with. He's probably got some company that's got an exclusive deal on these signs. This is a bunch of crap," said Congresswoman Nancy Pellegra (D-CA).
"This is like their last plan to teach spanish speaking Americans English by having them memorize 'Walk/Don't Walk' signs. That really worked," she added sarcastically. That program, introduce by Republicans in 2005 had problems from the start when the signs, made in Mexico, were initially written in Spanish.
"I think we can use these signs to teach modern art, public safety, athletics...a whole host of subjects that will help impoverished kids catch up. It may make up the difference between whites and blacks on the 'No Child Left Behind' mandated tests," beamed Bennett. "What's he been smoking?" asked Pellegra.
